We do not support alcohol consumption. But we all understand that you might occasionally have a drink, whether it's at a social event or a glass of wine over a dinner. But what does alcohol have to do with weight loss? Are we even allowed to have an occasional drink when trying to lose weight and exercising? The answer is – yes, we can, but in moderation and keeping a few details in mind.

Alcohol promotes weight gain over time. As soon as alcohol appears in your stomach, your body makes it a priority to process alcohol, as it's perceived as a toxin. During that time, your body cannot digest other food that contains carbs and fats, which results in weight gain. What's more, alcohol is often served with mixers and snacks that are packed with calories.

What should you do? Be moderate and don't overdrink. One or two glasses of wine won't do you any harm, but regular drinking can lead to various problems, the majority of which are much more serious than extra weight. When you are at a party, choose low calorie drinks. The calories in one Piña Colada can be the equivalent of a whole meal. It's better to spend those calories on a good meal before going to a party. If you are hungry, alcohol will have a quicker effect on you and you'll be more likely to overindulge in unhealthy snacks.
