Many of you know that not sleeping enough is harmful for health and that a good quality sleep is essential. But sleeping too long is far from being a cure-all solution, either. People who sleep for more than 9 hours but still don’t feel refreshed in the morning, may have a medical disorder called oversleeping or hypersomnia.
Those who tend to oversleep become less active during the day, often feel out of focus, start having memory problems and meet the all-time companions of too much sleep – headache and back pain. But it’s only the tip of the iceberg.
Apart from an inconsistent sleep routine, oversleeping may be caused by serious health conditions, like diabetes and heart problems. Or mental conditions, like depression. While sleeping is great and vital for human health, too much sleep can even significantly shorten overall lifespan.
Please mind, however, that oversleeping doesn’t always read ‘sleep disorder’. It can also be temporary and caused by the use of stimulants, like alcohol or certain medications. And then there are also people who simply love to sleep. But whatever the case, it’s better to see a sleep specialist for a checkup to figure out the real reason behind that, since there can be serious health risks.
If you’re positive that oversleeping is a side-effect of your prescription meds, talk to your doctor about a substitute or about eliminating them altogether. In case your sleepiness is a disguised medical condition, treating it will help you gradually reboot your normal sleep-wake cycle. It always helps to practice a healthy sleep hygiene and make your bedroom a relaxing, stress-free space for sound and serene slumbers.
