Hydration is a basic component to healthy lifestyle. However, consuming excessive amounts of water can cause more harm than good. When there’s too much of water in the body, then sodium levels drop which is more dangerous than dehydration. This condition is called “hyponatremia”. The low concentration of sodium in your blood can cause some unpleasant side effects. A mild form of hyponatremia can cause bloating, nausea, vomiting, loss of energy, muscle weakness, spasms or cramps. A clear urine color might be also a sign of hyponatremia.

To avoid such issue try to consume special sports beverages with electrolytes during workouts. Choose isotonic drinks that contain sodium. Make sure to drink such beverages before and during endurance events that are longer than 60-90 minutes in duration. To prevent hyponatremia increase salt intake prior to competition or long run and when training in hot weather.
