Protein is an organic compound that is made up of amino acids and is an essential part of any complex living organism. Most cells in our bodies are made up of protein, which we need to grow and to recover. Protein is also an important element of our muscle tissue, hair, immune system and it makes up essential hormones.

Proteins consist of 22 amino acids. Some amino acids can be produced by our body, but 9 of them can only be obtained from food. These are called essential amino acids. Only a well-balanced diet, rich in protein can provide all of the essential amino acids our bodies need. Protein is also the most filling macronutrient, meaning that a meal that includes protein will satisfy your hunger faster and will help you stay full for longer.

If you lead an active lifestyle and exercise regularly, you need to consume about 1 gram of protein per 1 kilo of weight to allow your muscle tissue to maintain itself and recover.
