You need to be in good shape physically to enjoy being active. If your feet hurt, you will not enjoy your workout. Fortunately, common foot issues can be easily treated and avoided.
Here are some guidelines for maintaining healthy feet:
- To prevent blisters, keep your feet dry. Do not wear cotton socks as they absorb perspiration - use fiber socks instead. If you prefer wearing cotton socks, use an anti-chafing stick or petroleum jelly, to decrease irritation that can result in blisters. Also, do not tighten or loosen laces too much, as this can cause irritation as well.
- When your arches ache, check the way you walk. You should be leading with your heels and pushing off with your toes. If the problem persists, use an arch support, or consult your podiatrist.
- To avoid blackening of your toenails, keep them well-trimmed and filed, and make sure you are wearing the right shoe size. If one of your feet is larger, buy walking shoes in the larger size.
