Simple carbs are macronutrients consisting of one or two molecules of sugar. They are easily digested and are a quick source of energy. There are two types of simple carbs that are different combinations of sugar molecules – monosaccharides and disaccharides. Glucose, fructose and galactose are monosaccharides, while lactose, sucrose and maltose are disaccharides (you have probably read these titles on food labels or at least heard about them from doctors or dietitians).

When we speak about sugar, we usually refer to table sugar, which is in fact, sucrose. Simple carbs are often added to food and don't provide any useful nutrients. However, there are natural sources of simple carbs that are good for your health as they also contain fiber, vitamins and antioxidants. These include: dairy products, fruits and vegetables. Avoid simple carbs contained in processed and refined foods: candy, soda, table sugar, syrup, cookies and cakes.
