Ver 1.0
Here you will find all the information you need on how to set up your new theme as well as customize it.
There are two ways two install your new WordPress theme. Uploading it through WordPress is the more simple approach. If you're comfortable and familiar with FTP then you can also go that route.
Inside the folder you first unzipped from the file you downloaded, you'll find the "docs" folder (conatins the file you're reading right now!) as well as another zip file named "Calm.zip". This file named "Calm.zip" is the file you'll be uploading through WordPress.
If you've yet to install WordPress itself you can find all the information and steps here: https://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress.
Once you have WordPress up and running and you're logged in you'll want to hover over or click on the "Appearance" tab on the left of the main admin screen and select the "Themes" tab.
From the "Themes" screen, click 'Add new' at the top. You'll now be at the "Install Themes" screen. Click 'upload' from the uptions at the top. From here click 'choose file' and then navigate to and select the "calm.zip" file and click 'install now'.
That's it! WordPress should tell you it installed successfully and your theme will be ready to use and activate which is explained in "Basic Setup" below.
First you'll want to extract the "calm.zip" file. You should end up with a folder named "calm" or whatever name you may have specified when extracting.
Log in with your FTP details and navigate to your WordPress installation (usually the root directory).
Look for the 'wp-content' folder. Inside that folder you will find the 'themes' folder. Simply upload the "calm" folder into the 'themes' folder and you're all set! Your theme will be ready to use and activate which is explained in "Basic Setup" below.
The first you thing you'll want to do is activate the Calm theme.
Do this by going to the "Appearance" > "Themes" tab. You will see all of your installed themes. Under Calm click activate and you're all set.
First you'll want to decide whether you want your homepage to be a static page (like the portfolio page for example) or if you want your home page to act as a blog.
By default WordPress shows blog posts on the homepage(using the index.php template file) so if you want a static home page you need to take the following steps.
To make a portfolio page siimply create a new page in WordPress and select the "Portfolio" template to the right under Page Attributes.
You'll find the 'Portfolio Items' tab to the left of the admin screen. To add a new item click 'Add new'. From here you will be able to choose what type of portfolio item it will be and add your images, videos and descriptions.
Choose 'Standard' below the editor for a standard post. With a standard post, when you set a Featured Image, it will show up on the page for that particular item along with whatever you put in the content editor.
To display a video on your item's page you can simply click "Add Media" right above the editor window. Then click insert URL and simply add your videos embed code. Also make sure to select "Video" under the editor window.
With a slider post you can add any number of images to a slider that will display on the item's page. It's recommended to use the same size images for these slides.
You can assign your portfolio items to different categories so they can be sorted. While you're editing a portfolio item look to the right of the screen and you will see 'Portfolio Categories'. Here you can add new categories or add an item to an existing one. When you create a new category it will appear above the portfolio and you can sort your items by each different category.
To keep things simple, Calm calms with only one shortcode. This shortcode is to easily let you display a button. Above any editor window you will see a label for "Button". Simply click it and enter the URL and Button text when prompted and the shortcode will display.
In the theme options tab under Appearance, you'll find different options and settings such as uploading your logo. Most of them are self explanatory. Some options need to be set here in order for certain elements to show up correctly on the home page such as your footer social media links, logo and copyright.
For the menu to display properly styled you need to create a new menu and set it to "Main" next to theme locations.
This theme comes with a dummy content file. Here is how to install it.
From the WP admin go to Tools > Import. From here click on the last option labeled 'WordPress'.
Here you will choose the file named 'calmwordpress.wordpress.xml' that is contained inside this download. Then click 'Upload File and Import'.
On the next page make sure to check the "Import Attachments" box and then click submit. All the demo posts and content will now be loaded.
Keep in mind some elements such as the logo still have to be set within the theme options. While the menu buttons are imported the menu still needs to be activated and set to the correct location.
